What's your main browser? I use five-six browsers like it's still the 2000s because some browsers blacklist flash but are more efficient to use, while others don't blacklist things but have shitty adblock and horrible design
»

I also use 4-5 browsers for similar reasons. I usually use waterfox for normal browsing, qutebrowser for maximum comfficiency, firefox for things that waterfox can't handle, and chromium if i ever need to pretend to be a normal person online or if firefox doesn't cut it.
I hate that qutebrowser doesn't work well on this site, uploading stuff always breaks so sadly no pic 4u. I read that it was a QTWebEngine problem though, so there's not much i can do about it aside from wait.

My main browser is Brave. It's based off of Chromium but supposedly is supposed to protect your privacy. Probably a scam but at least it's not Chrome.
»
4 guest@cc 2020-04-01T07:52:40
Vivaldi most of the time because it has too many features I got used to, I also use firefox once in a while to see if it still sucks, and chrome for compatibility because I cba compiling chromium and gentoo doesn't provide binaries. I also tried qutebrowser for a while, it's pretty good but I can't do without extensions. I installed eaf in emacs recently too, there's a webkit browser in it; it seems pretty cool for following links from emacs and stuff like that, but it's not really integrated it in my workflow yet.

Also using brave. It's incredibly fast and I earned like 50 bucks in imaginary currency just by browsing already. Haven't tried to pay it out yet so not sure how good that works.
»
6 guest@cc 2020-04-01T13:33:46
I use Brave because my computer is a potato and it has most of the features I want built-in.

I don't trust Brave because I don't trust Eich and I don't trust blockchain.

I use vimb, which is like qutebrowser but generally works a bit worse. It uses webkit2gtk though, so there aren't qt dependencies which suits me good. As much as possible I try not to do stuff in the browser so it's not a massive issue usually.

i haven't seen it used in a way which has made me think "oh yeah, this is the future" to a greater extent than its made me think "oh yeah, this is using a lot of energy, is resulting in a lot of demand for gpus, and ultimately doesn't even really address the real issue." or something. thats not to say i dont think that it can have its uses, rather i havent seen them yet. i prefer to stay wary of new technologies before embracing them.

currently i find that adblock + donations / email conversations with people i appreciate suffices.

First, I thought ``five-six'' is the name of a defunct webbrowser project. Then you said ``4-5,'' which I thought was a typo then immediately realized that it's the numbers of webbrowsers you use. That using multiple webbrowsers is a legitimate shows is a symptom of a bad design choice: singularity+complexity.

I had used Pale Moon for a few years, but I switched to Waterfox after I did a new OS installation after upgrading my PC. I forgot why I wanted to leave Pale Moon, but I think it was related to extensions..
I'm using this Mahoro theme and it's pretty nice, but I should probably find a better one that is more legible: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/automatic-maiden-mahoro/?src=search

Get Pale Moon. It is to Firefox as MATE is to GNOME. I've been using it as my main browser for years and it's fantastic.

Fair warning though; the dev team is made up of like three people, all of which are dickheads, so progress is very slow compared to most other browsers.

I used to use Pale Moon for everything, but the developer decided to drop out of their Patreon revenue stream because they didn't like that Patreon made a statement in support of Black Lives Matter. Not the first weird decision made at the expense of the browser that made me jump off. I'm hoping a team of developers can come together and create a similar project with less insanity, because I'd move there in a heartbeat.

Ungoogled Chromium, though. Always preferred Firefox and hate adding to the engine's market share but it's better than faux privacy. I still like Mozilla but wish they would do better.
guest@cc 2020-10-17T20:02:19
Hatreon panders to the alt-right (they hate to be called that but that's what they are), so unless that's your audience (which for Pale Moon it isn't), you're basically committing career suicide by using it. Subscribestar is a much better alternative.
guest@cc 2020-10-17T01:10:55
Why didn't he move to Hatreon?
guest@cc 2020-10-16T19:03:56
The issue with the Pale Moon devs is that they think they know better than you. They design the browser how they want to design it and actively ignore any issues with the browser, criticism from people who use it, and plain old practical reality.

At the end of the day it's their browser and they can do what they please with it, but they've definitely shot themselves in the foot multiple times when it came to making the browser successful.

Sidethreading for off topic

There's a little project that's a Pale Moon fork called Web Browser, but it is a really tiny project with one dev and a few contributors so far. The project is slow too with no precompiled binaries yet. You will have to compile Web Browser from source. Git repo is at https://git.nuegia.net/webbrowser.git/

Pic related is from digdeeper's browsers article: https://digdeeper.neocities.org/ghost/browsers.html#webbrowser
guest@cc 2020-10-20T00:43:33
These devs are only out to cobble together a browser that suits their personal needs.
guest@cc 2020-10-19T22:47:08
Digdeeper has the same sort of attitude as the Pale Moon devs, just applied to different things. I don't trust him to make a good browser.
»
43 guest@cc 2020-10-19T22:03:56
why not just look at firefox's source code and convince them not to do something you don't like rather than creating 100 spinoffs that will never be updated?

guest@cc 2020-10-19T22:53:20
Different people like different things.

Also, it's unfair to say that pale moon never gets updated, because it's got very little to do with the mainline Mozilla codebase at this point. It's basically its own thing.
»
44 guest@cc 2020-12-12T01:04:56
I use Ungoogled Chromium nowadays because everything else sucks nowadays.
>firefox

lots of bundled spyware that gets reenabled every update and you'd need to mess around with a userjs script that will probably not work the next firefox update
>pale moon

devs are being hostile and the browser is adding in features the users don't want
>web browser whatever that is

dead schizo project
>alternative browsers

they still rely on chromium's engine or apple webkit and they don't have enough extension support

finally switched from pale moon to ungoogled chromium
for some reason I had been having some serious performance issues with pale moon and it would often freeze for a couple seconds after I open a new website. I thought it would take forever to switch browsers (which is why it took so long for me to ditch palemoon), but is has been surprisingly easy so I'm glad for that.
Overall I'm hoping that webbrowser fixes all the issues I had with palemoon because I still prefer the firefox style over chromium

Browsers have felt lacking to me for a long time now. It seems you always end up making a sacrifice for something. From waterfox I think I'm returning to firefox, just because of a bunch of inconveniences piling up. Most recently, the search shortcut box to search things like google recently stopped interacting with my cursor in any way other than selecting all text, but that's not the only thing.
So annoying.

56 guest@cc 2024-01-18T21:33:06
I went back to Firefox after not using it since...I don't even know, probably 2008 at the latest. I like it a lot more than Chrome based browsers which I switched to. Not sure why I switched to be honest because Chrome was never any better I found...I guess I kind of just tried them out and forgot to go back to Firefox.

I'd like to try some other browsers out but almost all use the same small handful of browser engines, which is not that fun to me. And the few that don't use the usual stuff like Gecko, Blink and so on which means compatibility with some sites might be awkward.
»
57 guest@cc 2024-01-21T13:49:37
I've honestly mostly stuck with Firefox for years, so much so that I wasn't even aware of their problems with userbase until relatively recently. I do have other browsers up for different purposes, like Librewolf, SeaMonkey and Konqueror, but as you can see most of those are also Firefox based. It just did what I needed to do without the Google/Microsoft drawbacks.
I wouldn't mind using something smaller like Midori or Falkon, but I still run in to problems with those on occasion.

I'm thinking of moving back to Qutebrowser. They still haven't implemented a visual cosmetic filter/"Element Zapper" like in uBlock, and their content controls don't appear to be as fine as those of uMatrix, but if others have stuck with the browser for so long, then there must be working alternatives to those features.

I gave the Firefox family another chance recently, and I really like the combination of Tree Style Tabs and Multi-Account Containers. Each container has its own set of cookies, and each container can have their own proxy settings. Tree Style Tabs is also aware of Multi-Account Containers, and works with it seamlessly, letting you open tabs in the container of your choice. It's a really nice way to organize tabs.
