I downloaded the 30 MB Debian installer ISO hoping that I could avoid extra cruft, but the fucker ended up downloading Gnome and a bunch of shit anyway, and my first 10 minutes of using Debian outside of a VM have started with the removal of 800+ MB of packages. Is this what the laconically-labeled 'Debian Desktop Environment' option was? Fuck.

Fuck it, I'm razing this shit to the ground and trying again.

You dont pick a desktop at install if you dont want to have a huge pile of bullshit dumped on you, you install the environment you want after installing the base system.

just install the base system, it gives you the option when going through the installer

I figured it would be something basic. I was prepared to uninstall whatever I didn't like about it. I didn't expect it to be so goddamn massive and bloaty.

Never install a ""desktop environment"", those are always full bloat. More minimal programs will call themselves "window managers".

Also, although I'm using Slackware right now, I'd lightly recommend Debian's SysVInit alternative, Devuan. Internally, it's pretty much the same, and the repo basically just filters Debian's, so you shouldn't run into any issues.

xfce and lxcd/lxqt are the 'light' DEs.
any DE is just a bundle of 'Desktop' software with some integration.
like anon said, install a window manager and any stuff you want if you dont want a bunch of shit you've never wanted or needed. reccomendations:
cwm(my choice. extremely easy to configure, you can put windows into 'groups' and show or hide any number of groups at one time instead of virtual desktops. a useful, simple launcher is integrated with it, youll have to install one for the others.)
fvwm
openbox but install some configuration software for it as well to set up the menus, and install premade themes you like. more of a pain in the ass than those two to configure as you like.
its also better to settle on one easy-to-replicate setup you like and just get comfy with it than to switch everything constantly.

^fvwm is so cool. The config is a bit esoteric and it took me a while to understand whats up with it until I found a nice config to start from, but it's more configurable than xfce on the long run. Besides you can also make it look like we're still in 2093 with big ass 3D borders which is a big plus for me.
The development is slow though, I wonder if they'll ever release the v3.

Don't use a distribution for which GNOME is the default, then. Try OpenBSD.

If anyone cares, I fixed my system. I haven't looked into a lot of window managers, but I've always liked wmaker and jwm. cwm and fvwm look interesting.

I haven't tried a whole lot of them, but I quite like dwm. It's even better when you set the border size to 0. The only thing that bugs me is the lack of a tray, but I can probably fix that. The patch for adding a tray on their site doesn't seem to work as-is.

DWM seems nice, unfortunately its keybinds are tied to the keys' symbol and not their position on the keyboard and I couldn't get the related patch to work. I might try it again once I switch to qwerty.

>>13 Patch? Remapping the controls should be as easy as replacing a couple of bindings in config.h. Is it just something I'm not getting? I'm not too familiar with alternate schemes like AZERTY

AZERTY keyboards are all kinds of retarded, you have to hold shift to write numbers and some symbol keys are placed in awkward positions for literally no reason. Depending on the wm it can get annoying to fix.
I think I tried to apply this patch https://dwm.suckless.org/patches/keycodes/ . I don't remember exactly where I messed up, it was the first time I tried to patch something and I was in a hurry, I didn't bother too much.
