OP here, I don't really understand why I decided to make a thread about this but It's too late now. Enjoy.

Sometimes I wish YouTube wasn't such a solid hub for long form tutorials and lectures on so many subjects. It's really useful when looking to learn stuff, but it's so easy to get distracted, and the distractions themselves are rarely anything great.

I, too, wish there was a mirror of carefully curated longform videos, but what can you do?

youtube has become so bad you can usually learn more by reading some ancient lecture slides for five minutes than an hour long video.
videos always boil down complex ideas into naive talking points using only intuitive reasoning.
it is patronizing to someone that put any effort into learning, and enlightening for zero-agency people that "fucking love science".
It has a dangerous spill-over effect where if you try searching other parts of the web you end up finding lots of the same garbage repeated by people that want to be authorities in their gay ass community.
I call it the "wired" phenomenon, where you get some mid-wit woman host reading from a script, washed-up "authorities" as guests, pandering/quirky attitude (2009 memes XD), high production value, lots of subtle advertising, and minimal substance.

Of course the most popular stuff is surface level garbage. It's simply what the majority of people are willing to consume. I'm surprised people are still surprised the lowest common denominator is, in fact, the lowest common denominator.

It depends. The stuff I'm drawn to is usually by people who have low production values and may not actually know anything about AV. It's often dry content, but the speaker is earnest. Professor Messer has decent production, but he's also very straight to the point and dry in his lecturing.

Of course, there's always MIT Coursework and the like as an alternative.
