Rio is pretty good, its just the plan9port imitation thats bad. It doesnt have subrios or window swallowing.

I've been wanting to try it out but it's hard to tell which projects are still being worked on. The most ambitious one I found which looks to still be somewhat active is called "harvey os". Have you heard of it?

Ive heard of it but never seen much of it. I'd reccomend 9front. Its active and alive and it works perfectly on thinkpads, and its what I use.
Some advice:
You wont understand how to use it for nearly anything at first. Just get aquainted with the basic ideas and use it for basic stuff, like pictures and music. ...I guess sshfs to copy them from your other machines in that case too. Just an example!
you have to read the fqa, the manpgaes for whatever you wanna know about, and probably a paper or two as well. its not like linux where the documentation is longer than epic literature, and you just search trhough for some single feature, nor is it like linux where half the programs are great big monolithic blocks presenting their own special little alternate world of interface and configuration problems. The documentation is easy to read and helpful, and it allows you to understand how things are used and thus fit together, but you have to actually understand that. Its NOT very good for quickly figuring out the magic incantation that does the particular thing you want. This is obviously a little exxagerated, but its roughly like that.
the 9front devs are a load of cranky sourpusses who're burned out with newbie questions, but you can generally get useful support on irc, IF, you followed the step above, in which case you'll have narrowed down your problem to a little, specific, easy to answer question. probably, most of the time.
extending from 'yo uwont know how things work at first', just have fun poking around and seeing what options are available to yo uand how things work, and how you can combine them together usefully. dont get angry or sad when something doesnt work, like you've been insulted, its just alien.
disclaimer:
Im an ignorant child, Im just about able to use the system for the things I'd want to use it for that dont fall into the category of nonexistant(video player, javascript web browser, etc). Thats just my personal experience in getting to the point where I can kind of use it. I'm not smart or knowledgable, please understand.

Well, I know that around 2008 the developer of some extra tools for plan9 started some sorta project of making publicly accessible grid of systems, but interest petered out because it was just another way to share files and kinda slow because 9p isnt that good for big file transfers. He posted about that on /g/ and got some people interested, at the time. Perhaps its something to do with that.
On that subject, he actually restarted the 'public grid' project in a more well thought out form this time. Thats the 9GRID you see in winwatch up there, a subrio with the 9gridchan resources in its namespace. It has neat stuff like a chatroom thats literally just append-only files an yone can write, and a wiki.

I actually just tried connecting to this using the "9pfs" tool for linux. It seems like it worked ok, but everything is empty. The command I ran was:
9pfs -p 6675 registry.9gridchan.org ./9p
I see a bunch of files in there named like

With some different IP's and numbers at the end, and there is also the files "event", "find", "index", and "new".
When I can any of them they all just seem to be empty. Except for event, which caused 9pfs to hang when I tried to see what was inside.

Is it supposed to be like that? Or maybe the problem is just 9pfs

You just got the registry, you havnt mounted the services yet.
Read 'connecting' again- like it says,
"You will now have an index of current services at /mnt/registry/index. Use the following command to generate a list of commands to attach to them:"
the sequence of seds below that will give you a the plan9 commands needed to connect and mount the services, which you can translate to 9pfs commands.

no, I changed the colors in rios source, and used a modified version with background images. though adding background images is easy and I could/should shove a tarball of current rio with that change somewhere easy to get.
changing the colors in the source is easier than tweaking a config file on unix despite what it sounds like, because rio compiles instantly and you can start a rio window within rio to test your colors(or other changes.) and nest arbitrarially deeply in fact.
colors are in data.c in rios folder.
I think the devs look down on such ricing but some of them do it anyways and that sort of thing makes me feel comfy and at home.
