 | Just beat the first Marathon a few days ago, and I'm feeling good about it.
-This game feel WAY ahead of its time. Despite having little experience with FPS games, I was able to hop in and play with little adjustment. -That said, some of the level design choices weren't all to my taste. There were way too many tight corridors, and I could do without the stages that use lava floors you have to run on. -Despite being so primitive, the game has a surprising amount of atmosphere to it. I know I got shocked by enemies like the invisible compilers on G4 Sunbathing. -I really like how they told their story. This is another bit where the game feels ahead of its time, it gave me Metroid Prime flashbacks, though Marathon's text has better writing. -The game does its "Are you really the hero of this story?" shtick pretty well. Instead of judging the player for playing the game, it makes the player feel like they're just being used to further the goals of others. Some of those Terminals really made me feel like a puppet, and the bits I've read in the sequel makes it seem like this is going to be a recurring theme. -While the enemies are dumb, they're still fun to fight in many cases.
This is a good game, and I'm glad I stumbled upon it. |
