Do you play CAVE games, shmups or arcade games in general?
Not really.
Mostly just DoDonPachi and Dangun Feveron, but if I feel like playing a shmup I'll usually go with Ikaruga, Cho Ren Sha 68k, Crimzon Clover, or Touhou.I don't play any of them nearly often enough to be good at them, though.
im thinking about getting into shmups again
I used to use MAME to play some DoDonPachi, on my previous computer.>>3Ikaruga is fun.I too am bad at all shmups. I still have no normal 1CC in touhou
>>5Really? I think once you are comfortable with the mechanics, anybody should be able to clear a Touhou game on normal. If you are inexperienced, I think th04 and th07 are some of the easiest games to get a 1CC in. Just getting a single 1CC should be enough to motivate you to keep playing the genre. th04 and th07 are easy because of how many resources the game gives you, and with th04 the game is very short with stage 5 being practically nonexistent. In th07, the hardest part is Youmu, who can literally be bomb spammed entirely through, even with Marisa because of the sheer number of lives you get in that game.
>>6PoDD might become my first normal 1CC.I'm just bad at video games, is all.th04 was my first easy 1CC though, I remember. I'll have to try it on normal.
I'm bad at danmaku and not terribly into them but I've been playing Witch-Bot Meglilo and just cleared it on easy. It's a pretty basic game, you can shoot and collect different satellites and then you have a (depleting) warp ability that stops time and lets you teleport to any spot on the screen. You also have shields that let you take hits without dying. That's about it.The story and characters are deranged and I'm almost certain they were inspired by Chargeman Ken. I hope Meglilo returns in other games.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUJVwt7NndQ
Have any of you played Mamorukun Curse!
Decided to buy Danmaku Unlimited 2 & 3 on whim, and I do not regret them at all. It's nice to pop on and have a SHMUP session on the go.I used to be big in to shmups years ago, was even a regular on shmups.system11.org for a while in addition to Pooshlmer. I still really like them, though I don't congregate around other folks who do as much, they tend to be really up tight about it.I liked R-Type and Psikyo games the best. The former for both its gameplay and its mood, and the latter because fast bullets are cool, even if I suck with them.
Is there a reason the genre shifted hard from hori shooters in the '80s to the vert shooters of today? If anything, I would have expected the opposite since a tate setup is easier in a dedicated cabinet.
>>11My guess would be increased resolution.Vertical makes a bit more sense for hand eye coordination, but with the small resolution of TVs it was hard to provide enough space in vertical (and make sprites big enough), so they stuck to horizontal.
>>10That's cool to hear. Didn't know we had other real shmuppers on here. Agreed on your opinion of shmup communities, then can be pretty elitist. Going to be checking out that English version of the new Dangun Feveron port here soon. Cave used to have some iPhone ports which I was surprised to hear were actually good. Looks like they don't work anymore due to lack of maintenance. Never tried a mobile shmup.>>11I think it just has more to do with the genre changing than anything. Vertical is simply better when there's lots of bullets.
>>13Danmaku Unlimited isn't a bad one in the least. Had a good deal of fun with those games, and I'm considering even buying them for PC at one point, since my mid-range phone has issues handling DU3 at times.I recently picked up Crimzon Clover, along with Darius Burst and DDP Resurrection. I've been stuck on Crimzon a lot, it's a nice little rush of a game, and I can understand now why it has such a great reputation.R-9 unrelated, but very cool.
I just play Touhou and Galaga. Right now I'm focusing on th5. I play Galaga whenever I go to this one place that has a machine. I got a personal best last time I went, felt good. Mostly suck at shmups but I like them and want to get better, and branch out.
