There are differences in style and the overall quality-standard. YTPMVs focus more on specific audio samples and pitch-shifting, whereas MADs in most cases "tell a story" due to the broader usage of source material and with an emphasis on beat-synching word scraps, as well as more deliberate pitch-shifting reserved for specific parts or audio-channels. The quality-standard with MADs generally is way higher, both regarding video- and audio-production, although that is not to say YTPMVs are necessarily worse, just a different and more laid-back approach.
I haven't been up to date with this subject for ages now, but last time I checked, a lot of new videos both on YT and Nico seemed to be combinations of both styles, which I assume is because a lot of veterans on Nico stopped uploading frequently or quit the hobby altogether due to entering work life, meaning new creators on there might be more likely to get into the whole thing by taking the videos uploaded by westerners, or japanese with western fever, as an example. Collaborating with westerners also started to become a thing with the start of this decade. |
