tell me about your favorite mecha, almost anything counts, from FLCL to Macross.

You actually posted one of them. I always had a soft spot for Canti,
I also really like the Gespenst line from Super Robot Wars. Especially the S-type ones.
I ended up getting charmed by them big time when I first played SRW OG on the GBA, and my preference only increased as I went further in to the franchise. They're definitely one of my favorite Grunt units around, having a lot of personality that Grunts often intentionally lack, as well as having the underdog appeal. Seeing scenes of certain pilots going wild in a Gespy is always a treat.

I've still been meaning to get into SRW franchise, but haven't gotten around to it yet. And also, yeah that is a great Grunt suit.

Based, I should really watch Macross.

Shit, forgive me if I'm wrong but that's Gaogaigar innit? Always loved the Gaogaigar design. One of my favorite Super Robots.

They weren't joking when they called it 'The King of Braves'. It's been a while since I last watched it, but I enjoyed GGG quite a bit, even if it started slowly. The up beat and hopeful tone also made it a pleasant watch.

I think it's just Mobile Suit Gundam in this case, though there is a series of side materials with a very similar acronym (MSV), so a mix up is inevitable.

OP here, my situation is worse, I've just been entering the mecha sphere by sorting by most popular on anime sites.

Though I did legitimately fall in love with FLCL. I've always liked robots, I've always liked rock music, I've been playing bass guitar for a while and I really fucking like sekai-kei narratives. It all clicked for me.

Nothing's wrong with Macross, it just hasn't amazed me so far with anything. It's just alright so far. Might change once I watch Delta, who knows.

Huh, so you watched FLCL recently? Everyone I know that loves it had watched it way earlier so I wonder what you think of it in comparison to other stuff you've watched alongside it. I still have my old DVDs of it that I bought around 2002 and god damn that's 20 years ago. I remember people saying something like "you need to see FLCL as a teenager and in early 2000's to appreciate it", so I'm glad people can still love it two decades later.
I've stayed far away from the sequels because I don't want to see it tarnished, but Adult Swim has again announced something related to FLCL, but it looks really bad: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fD-HHpPws-c

I think as long as you've lived through the 2000s, that you should be able to love FLCL.
>Sequels

Yeah I watched, them, they aren't as bad as I thought they'd be, but they are still bad. The new thing from adult swim makes me want to die though. Kinda wish they'd let this story die, it was a once in fifty years thing, they've got to let it go.

>you need to FLCL as a teenager in the early 2000's to appreciate it

I've noticed an uptick in zoomers who are into FLCL the same way their was an uptic of zoomers into Lain.

Which is to say while Lain got adopted by the soft-uwu monster energy hikkineet girls, FLCL got adopted by the purple-overlay bedroom pop sad boys.

I honestly prefer the Lain adoption, because in that case Lain remains as a symbol of a group that we can definitely say is a bunch of terminally-online turbonerds, which fits generically with the show. However seeing FLCL AMVs with boy pablo playing over it, grosses me out personally. It reduces everything that made the show good into another visually-stimulating anime to play boring music to.

I didn't even know there was another FLCL sequel until about a week ago. Guess I'm just out of the loop there...though honestly I don't mind in this case. Some thing just don't need to be turned in to a franchise to Milk.

Do you mean the recent 3D announcement I mentioned? I think it's unknown whether or not it's a sequel or not. I won't bother following it, either, but it's kind of interesting to see that they're still throwing money at it and hoping for a miracle. It must mean the sequels, however panned, were successful.

I haven't watched FLCL, but I've read the translated light novels. I didn't like them too much. So much agonizing over being not grown yet. But I liked the webcomic Homestuck which has those themes too. My tastes must have changed from getting older.

I'd seriously recommend watching the OVA, you missed out on the soundtrack. Which makes the show to be completely honest.

What I love about Patlabor is that not only are its robots believable (not realistic, that's a different thing), they're also *mundane*. I mean, it's a beat cop anime with robots, which is a cool idea by itself, but you also see robots being used for boring jobs like constructions, and you even get to see them being transported on trucks like all work machines. I love that.
At the same time, I'll have to admit that it was the movies that really won me over. They're Mamoru Oshii movies first and mecha movies second. (I mean, I was nerding out over the fighter jets for most of the movie, not the robots...) You know how it is with his movies.
