Realism should stay in fine art. The style is too complex and cluttered to work for the more descriptive mediums of illustration and animation, and trying to compromise with semi-realism a-la American comics just results in the worst of both worlds, having neither the rich detail and vividness of realism, nor the clarity and flexibility of abstraction.

Honestly, I think realism should stay in photography. Or, rather, representative art should. A realistic portrayal of unrealistic subject matter (e.g. a photorealistic painting of Cthulhu) still makes sense, since you can't photograph Cthulhu, but I still much prefer stylized art in general.

So what you're saying is that if paintings of Monarchs were replaced by photos you'd stick with the latter.
But at the same time, the lack of any tool to save an image of reality is what made art from before the 30s look so realistic. And who is to say that the style that was used before wouldn't be considered a stylization in this day an age?
In short, your post offends me

I think there's more to Realistic drawing than just looking like Real Life, Anon. Even in a grounded drawing, an Artist's personality, view of the world, and mood will affect what they draw on to a canvas, and how the image looks. It's not as out there as a cartoon, but there is significant amounts of emotion one can put in to an otherwise realistic looking image.

I, on the other hand, want to see photorealistic comics.

Why? It's a style that actively fights against what the medium does well.

At least I said something. Your post is fucking nothing. If you at least said why I'm wrong you'd be moving the discussion forward.

I can't stand 4chan types like you. You don't feel the need to engage in any real discussion because you think you're too epic for it or some shit. Get that shit out of here.

Mediums don't do anything well. Artists do.

Sometimes I wonder about the purpose of illustrating or painting. Growing up, I always had the assumption that it was something your put out in front of people to increase their mood, but I didn't consider it beyond that. Now that I've been working on drawing again, I'm starting wonder how it was applied beyond being display pieces. What affect does it have on the creator of the piece itself.

Americans don't put too much importance on mental health, so sometimes it's easy to say there's not use to a piece of illustration beyond conveying information. I almost fell in to that trap once, until my own brain started acting funky, and I had to accept the reality of that a functioning mind is more than a wealth of knowledge.

Imagine a comic made entirely up of photos of actors. Add in little speech bubbles and captions. Do you really think that's worth reading, even as an experiment? Because that's just russian patreon porn shit lol
