People like Jhonen are way more common in animation than you'd think. And it's not just a new thing either; there's stories of Milt Kahl having autistic shitfits that would only end when Walt bribed him to not leave the studio.

I think it's that animation as a medium naturally draws maladjusted weirdos. The act of doing a ton of very similar drawings all day is only appealing to actual autists.
