The validators are actually useful, and can lead to more accessible websites in ALL browsers. W3C was good too before WHATWG (the html5 people) de facto took it over. RIP XHTML, I wish it succeeded.

CSS is really good though. You can do way more shit with way less boilerplate, meaning more choice in design with less server overhead. It's also a logical progression of the original idea behind the web, which was to be a way of displaying documents with multimedia content a-la hypercard
