Discuss dead websites here.

I found this really old anime website (waku.com) that seemed to collect lewd anime images, movies and doujinshi which they put on CDs and sold over the Internet. They seemed to start selling manga and toys later. There seems to have also been an Anime Picture Gallery with over 20801 entries and you could upload your own images there (sadly none survived). Most of the site has been archived poorly with barely any images surviving and the ancient server backend of the site causes a bunch of weird redirects to blank pages, but I managed to find these somewhat working pages:
https://web.archive.org/web/19970412081402/http://www.waku.com/
https://web.archive.org/web/19990127225054/http://www.waku.com/menu/center.idc
https://web.archive.org/web/19961214164143/http://www.waku.com/cdrom2.html

Any oldfags that remember this site?

I miss when the western anime community was smaller and more niche, and the only anime the mainstream cared about was the super commercial shit like dragonball and pokemon. Nowadays you have a bunch of dipshits on Twitter making Jojo references like it's the height of comedy and a bunch of self proclaimed "gamers" with waifu avatars making untrue statements about Japanese culture to support their political views.

Even kids that could be considered "normalfags" watched anime back in the day dude. Toonami started around the very end of the 90s, and school kids were already obsessed over shows like yu hakusho, dbz, sailor moon, tenchi muyo, etc. Then those same kids became teenagers in the early 2000s and that's where the loads and loads of autistic art galleries and fanfiction began. As far as the incompetent jojofags that can't pirate for shit and dream of going to Japan go, they'll move on from being retarded eventually; and then the next trend for autistic will come and you'll still be frothing at the mouth with anger. My advice to you would be to stop browsing twitter if all it does is get you riled up

It'd be nice to stand here and go "Durr Hurr Hurr, I'm not a degenerate so Neo-Puritanism doesn't affect me!", but really I think everybody online is going to find themselves getting harassed unless they go out of their way to avoid major sites. The court of the online public do not honor due process, and accusation are enough to get a whole mob after a person. Cases where the accusations turn out to be correct (Like the recent Smash and Evo drama where to accused admitted their misconduct) will make the mob bolder, such that if the mob is proven to be wrong, they would likely just brush it off as nothing important.

The solution seems to be "don't have nasty fetishes", but you and I know that nearly everyone online had skeletons in their closet. There are no saints here, but there are vigilantes.
Anonymous 2020-07-07T22:27:06
The trouble is that there is no singular "mob". The web has so many people on it nowadays that, statistically, a no matter what you say or do, you'll have a million people who want you dead for it.

I didn't see a thread about this subject when lurking around, and I was curious about what sort of stuff Taba listens to aside from singles.

Internet Radio seems a bit quant in the face of streaming services like Spotify and the like, but I've been enjoying being able to listen to music online without signing up for yet another service. But I'm also the kind of fossil that still downloads music files, so I guess I'm odd anyway. I ran in to GoodVibes a few months ago, and have been using that for the radio stations I listen to, like BitJam and Ryno Ryno.

Most of the podcasts I listen to have been NPR stuff, like "This American Life", "Serial", "S Town", etc. I guess that would count as entry level fair, but it's still nice and pleasent to listen to in general. I also used to listen to Chris Oatley's podcast for concept art.

Librivox has been my go to for audiobooks, which apparently /lit/ hates. It's been really useful in finding longform stories and philosophy which I lack the attention span to read properly.

I don't listen to much of anything. Admitting you listen to music by way of YouTube videos is pretty much the same as admitting you stream anime. I did like this defunct website from a few years ago that pulled from YouTube and let you share what you liked with others though.

This is probably something I would have done if I had a CD/DVD burning on my computer. I used to do that sort of thing all the time when I was younger, especially since I did a lot of walking around for long periods of time. Not having to change CDs mid-walk was very convenient.

It wasn't till later that I got in to listening to audiobooks. I got curious about philosophy, but lacked the attention span to sit down and read for long period of time, so I popped some audio files in to my mp3 player and listened to them as I walk/ran outside.

Internet radio, in my opinion, still fulfills a niche purpose. It's just as easy to use as Spotify or YT and others, simply open the stream in your browser and click play. The major benefit over other streaming services being that it's free. You can get constant new music via other services but at a price, and none of them are as robust or varied as a radio station. Beyond that there's a certain character to radio hosts and an excitement in looking forward to their weekly or daily shows and catching them.

Hosting your own internet radio station is a fun little project as well. When you host with Icecast (free & open source alternative to ShoutCast, both of them configurable media streaming servers) your stream is added to a YellowPages directory of Icecast streams across the globe. You can browse this at https://dir.xiph.org/ - some streams are tagged with searchable genres or styles. I really like finding the odd ones and seeing what is playing.
Some other stations I regularly tune into:

https://anonradio.net/ - SDF public radio station

Anonymous 2020-06-11T00:21:08
He's right you know. 4taba has been a part of the 4chanx-kissu webring, but who's behind the management is important.
Anonymous 2020-06-10T20:35:10
I disagree. Nothing of importance really changed in 4taba's culture after the takeover.

If you're talking about the increased prevalence of side-threads, it's because Verniy explained how to use them in the about page, whereas before you'd need to figure out how they worked by word of mouth

Tabamin stepped down because he didn't like the responsibility. He's still an active user here.

As for 4taba itself, it's definitely changed over the years, but it's not shit now. Hell, I'd say it's actually improved. It's developed its own personality distinct from other imageboards which is a very rare thing.

According to tabamin, it was designed to allow you to shame someone without derailing the thread. The intent was that if you have a box beneath your post it means you said something stupid enough that at least one person went out of their way to start a side-thread on your post. This way, people can get called out for being dumb without the site turning overly-aggressive or chaotic like 4chan.

It's for a couple reasons. One is what you wrote, except for the "shame" part, that doesn't make any sense since anyone can do sub replies for any reason. But it does catch derails if people are trying to shame each other.
The point isn't to figure out who is shamed and who isn't, in fact it's exactly that kind of mentality that it's supposed to put an end to. The point is that we shouldn't give a fuck. If 2 people want to have at it, nothing is going to stop them, but they don't have to derail the thread in the process.

Another reason is that it's basically another form of sage, except that the arguments people usually give for thinking sage is a "downvote" don't hold.
Anonymous 2020-04-13T03:46:40
I thought if they went top to bottom, like normal, then the 1st comment would be most visible and later comments are harder to see (you have to expand the box more). That could motivate shitposters to be the "first one".
Anonymous 2020-04-05T13:03:01
Why are sagethreads contravariantly (w.r.t. (nonsage) thread order) ordered? Also, I demand sidethreads for sidethreads; let 'em tree, I say.
sidethreadding doesn't bump. I'm terribly sorry; since I know this, it's all but obligatory:

Yes. In my experience, it gets better with practice, and degrades with neglect. What worked for me was the pomodoro technique, when you do 25 minute sessions of focus followed with 5 minutes of rest, using a timer. During the work part you focus on whatever you need to do and during the rest you shouldn't even think about it. Repeat until you are done. If 25 minutes is too long, you can start shorter, but with practice you will want to increase the length of the work sessions. The longest I had was hour long sessions, after that the rest is necessary as a health break from sitting too long! This helped me a lot during university and I still use it from time to time.

Not much, I wasn't deep into it aside from weed and alcool, I just had to quit going out, change my habits, and that was it. Alcool and weed was harder since I was smoking and drinking everyday but looking back quitting wasn't that hard since I was sick of it.
If anything try to keep friends who have a different lifestyle, mine all live the same way as I did and I had to quit seeing them for a while which was the hardest.

I actually looked into parkour stuff over the summer. Sadly, I don't have a lot of upper body strength, so pulling myself over tall obstacles and climing is/was kind of difficult at the moment, but I've definitely gotten a lot better since summer. Urbex is also really appealing, I've gone to some abandoned schools with some friends. Camping in an abandoned place sounds fun.

I don't know if this counts, when I'm in town I like "track" graffiti writers by following the trail of tags. There's something cool about investigating something which is in plain sight but no one pays attention to.

Also this thread got me to go skateboarding, I landed my first flip trick. It's like a dumb pressure flip where the board turns 360 around the long axis instead of 180 around two axes. I could never land it while trying to analyze my movement which pissed me off majorly, but it was a good day, I'm gonna keep skating until I forget again.

I explored an abandoned building years ago while I was running a lot, and I've been pining to do it again since. Unfortunately, the building I went in to before has been since closed up.

This is the only shot I have left of the inside of it. It was an old school/police building before being neglected. Had heavy water damage in one room too, enough for the ceiling to be weak.

So I finally worked out how to actually do a fucking ollie today. Turns out every online guide is complete bullshit, what you're actually meant to do is jump BEFORE you pop the tail so your back foot isn't on the board when it hits the ground, and sliding your front foot up just happens automatically. So much wasted time as a kid.
