Do you play CAVE games, shmups or arcade games in general?

Is there a reason the genre shifted hard from hori shooters in the '80s to the vert shooters of today? If anything, I would have expected the opposite since a tate setup is easier in a dedicated cabinet.

My guess would be increased resolution.
Vertical makes a bit more sense for hand eye coordination, but with the small resolution of TVs it was hard to provide enough space in vertical (and make sprites big enough), so they stuck to horizontal.

That's cool to hear. Didn't know we had other real shmuppers on here. Agreed on your opinion of shmup communities, then can be pretty elitist. Going to be checking out that English version of the new Dangun Feveron port here soon. Cave used to have some iPhone ports which I was surprised to hear were actually good. Looks like they don't work anymore due to lack of maintenance. Never tried a mobile shmup.

I think it just has more to do with the genre changing than anything. Vertical is simply better when there's lots of bullets.

Danmaku Unlimited isn't a bad one in the least. Had a good deal of fun with those games, and I'm considering even buying them for PC at one point, since my mid-range phone has issues handling DU3 at times.

I recently picked up Crimzon Clover, along with Darius Burst and DDP Resurrection. I've been stuck on Crimzon a lot, it's a nice little rush of a game, and I can understand now why it has such a great reputation.

R-9 unrelated, but very cool.

I just play Touhou and Galaga. Right now I'm focusing on th5. I play Galaga whenever I go to this one place that has a machine. I got a personal best last time I went, felt good.
Mostly suck at shmups but I like them and want to get better, and branch out.

I watched someone else play it online. It was nice. I think, at least artistically, the game is really amazingly done.

I didn't pick it up because I really did not enjoy the beta. Performance was really poor in the beta; I was not enjoying the mass fog covering every level or the same 4 prefabs copy/pasted all over. Is the final game different?

Yeah, other than that, I really only play VNs, which don't really count as games. I'm not a gamer.

Is this the best racquet sport game ever made? I'm a big Virtual Tennis/Power Smash fan, but this might have that series beat.
»
2 Player 1969-12-31T17:00:00
Why not just play real table tennis? I'm genuinely curious.
»
3 Player 1969-12-31T17:00:00
1. I don't have a table in my apartment.

2. I suck at table tennis compared to the characters in the game. I can't hit spin shots and smashes and have extended rallies the way I can in the game, and I don't know any people as good as the AI either. It gives you a tiny taste of world-class table tennis without having to dedicate your life to the sport.

3. Same reason I would play an FPS instead of going out and playing paintball, I suppose. You can enjoy both, but they're two different experiences.

I have been really enjoying Etrian Odyssey IV lately. Perhaps JRPGs aren't too hard for me.
The grinding isn't even that bad either, since you can just do quests and re-explore old dungeons and still gain reasonable amounts of EXP.

What does 4taba think of omgmobc?
It's basically just a clone of the old omgpop, if that rings a bell for anyone. There's some really fun games on there, you should definitely try it out when you're feeling bored! My favorite ones are Tonk and 8-ball.

The only problem really is the staff and community, which is a huge downer. Certain features, like for example the option to make a room private, are restricted to star (paying) members only. However, friends of the staff get that status and even more benefits for absolutely free. Some even abuse their status to ruin the fun of others and the worst thing is that they never get punished.
Only good thing is that you don't run into those that often, but it's still annoying and unfair.

The games are still great though.

Does anybody have any experience in videogame development? Any progress or finished games you'd like to show off? I've always wanted to try it out as a hobby, but the only one I've ever made is an artillery game for a programming class back in high school.

2 Player 1969-12-31T17:00:00
I once made a shmup with a map editor and sprites and all that yadda yadda, but it died in a HDD crash so I can't even find an screenshot. I also made some silly opengl stuff for learning but I don't know if it'll become a game since I don't really know what kind of game to make.
»
3 Player 1969-12-31T17:00:00
I've been starting various game projects almost my whole life. Never finished one though, I always find some flaw in the concept that would prevent it from ever being a "perfect" game and then I get discouraged.
I may have autism.

I've been studying Video games design for a 5th year now and I'll be going onto my 6th soon.

It's easy but also hard, many game engines have alot of pre-built packages for you and with a new "Blue print" system sweeping alot of the software its getting easier (Blue prints are pre-built snippets of codes you can drag and drop together in a nice simple way)

You just have to come up with a good idea, fucking you can come up with a good selling app in a 2d game engine if it has a good design to it

What are some actually good videogames based on anime, especially old and/or JPN-exclusive stuff? There are so many anime out there that would be great for vidya adaptations, but lots of the games are just shitty cash-ins that use a popular license to make a quick buck. Pic related for the "actually good" category from the little I've played.

can't judge the pricing since it's vapourware, but Serial Experiments Lain seems pretty sick
shame the website's so shit

3 Player 1969-12-31T17:00:00
What do you mean, vapourware? It looks like it was released. And what website are you talking about?
»
4 Player 1969-12-31T17:00:00
well I guess so, but from what I can tell, it wasn't very popular
I'm talking about the translation hosted at http://laingame.net/, which isn't a patch, but a site that tries to emulate the progression used in the game
»
5 Player 1969-12-31T17:00:00
Oh, nice. Thanks for the link, it looks pretty cool. I've been meaning to watch the show, so I'll have to try that out afterwards.
»
6 Player 1969-12-31T17:00:00
alright, good luck figuring it out
basically, you view databases' files with the cancelled Apple "HotSauce" net interface, meant to rival the web that you see through the anime, and you would progressionally unlock pieces of the story and unimportant files
the site does you the "service" of unlocking them all for you, but I just get the feeling that they couldn't figure it all out themselves
