Let's talk about isometric RPG games. I have been getting back into these again lately, specifically Divine Divinity. It's pretty good and I like it so far.

But it made me realize when I started looking on Wikipedia and other sites about the game that there are A LOT of isometric RPG games out there. I also didn't get into them too much when I was a kid so I missed out on a ton, though I played them later in life. But there are still so many I don't know...!

Let's discuss isometric RPGs. What are some of your favourites? What would you recommend, both old and new? I know they've made a come back. I kind of wanted to try out Pillars of Eternity after I finish (or get bored of) Divine Divinity and check it out since it's pretty new.

I'm not too familiar with them, personally. I wonder if the first Dragon Age counts since it had a PC version that let you zoom out and it looked quite similar to the stuff you see in that genre.
If it does, then I think that's the only one I've played. I've thought about trying them, but never really got around to it. I tend to get stuck at Character Creation

Hmm, maybe Falcon's Eye? For the most part it's just an unwieldly interface to Hack which uses square tiles rather than hexagonal though. But Hack is a great game.

Never been on this imageboard before, but I like it. It's comfy.
Divine Divinity looks comfy too. I wonder if it plays nicely with the Steam Deck.

No idea if it plays on one as I don't have one...but if it does, that is another tempting reason to think about buying one of those things. I don't game as much as I used to and even though I built a gaming desktop at the start of 2023, I haven't used it all that much since games are so boring now. And I just don't like sitting at the desktop for 1000 hours a day anymore, so a portable might be a cool thing to have.

Anyway, yeah, Divine Divinity is a nice game, check it out! It was created in 2002, so maybe that will help you determine whether or not it can run on a SteamDeck.

I played the heck out of it many years back, but I was never willing to give enough time to become extremely good so I kind of just stopped playing. There were way too many heroes to learn. But what I did play I enjoyed. I wonder how much it has changed.

I've been loving Sonic Frontiers, it is a great change of pace compared to the on-rails playstyle most games have been having for over a decade.
My only hopes are the game isn't a one and done and devs actually adhere to what they made here. There is a lot of potential in hands

Besides that, just hoonting in MH3U, I got back to it because I can't kill Rathalos in G-Rank and decided to hunt Jhen Mohran to make his set, which has resistance to fire and defense buffs. Surely this will be crazy helpful

Friday Night Funk? I tried that one for the heck of it and I can't really enjoy the DDR-style inputs which I assume is the same thing as Stepmania. Stylized inputs like here in Theatrhythm (3DS) or the Vocaloid games let me ramp up the difficulty, and they also seem far more attuned to the song. I think too many supposed rhythm games just throw out a billion inputs for difficulty and it's not even related to the song at that point.

I like to sometimes play with Stepmania. Using the keyboard, with only two index fingers. I'm not good at it either, I have to set it so that the arrows come at a constant speed because I just can't adjust to speed changes, not even across songs but especially not during songs.

Caught my in an instant >>66. I stumbled on FnF and tried it out in curiosity, then quickly heard about Stepmania in discussions about that game.
Stepmania being an open source game that relies on its community for content, I had to do some digging to find songs and maps that weren't aggressively technical. Even maps said to be easy often opened up with a dense flood of notes I couldn't read. After finding appropriately newbie friendly stuff, I was actually able to start learning common patterns and how maps are built.

It seems, for Stepmania in this case, the notes are set to some part of the song, it's just that designers often pick parts of the song that have a bunch of notes to play, especially for hard songs, but this is still true in "easy" songs. I have a mechanical keyboard, so I can actually hear the stuff I play matching with the song...though this doesn't make it anymore welcoming.
With all that said, I ended up having fun, and my interest in the genre increased.

I'm kind of taken aback to find that there is a controversy about whether this is a rhythm game or not. I shouldn't be surprised given this is the internet, but it seems to bring some genuine annoyance out of some people.

It's really a great and fairly unknown game. The combat is pretty strange and hard to describe, but it's sort of similar to Rance or Advance Wars maybe? It's pretty infamous for its dark atmosphere, including child trafficking and rape among others. It also has an infamous evil route that becomes available in a new game+ that is really truly evil.

Coming back to them after a long time, I forgot how much I liked the GBA/DS era games.
Their sprite work is really superb and they're so full of character in them, I'm gonna flat out say they're some of the best among Sonic games. They just seem to have so much love poured into them. I always loved the world design/aesthetics too, like Music Plant Zone or Chaos Angel Zone. And Rush has always been one of my favorite soundtracks, the GBA soundchip never did many of the games on it any justice, not even just Sonic. Not to say that any of the GBA games music was bad, just that being on the GBA really holds them back.
Despite that I was raving about the sprites, Rush is actually my favorite game, though. It's just so quick and satisfying to play.

I've enjoyed Irem's, now Granzella's, works for a long time, both their arcade and console stuff, so it's nice to see their legacy still trucking along even after going under. Hopefully this means they won't get rendered Bankrupt again due to a natural disaster.

I mean honestly, fuck the story, fuck paying money. I usually play these to kill some time before sleeping. And most of the time the girls are cute. Used to play FGO earlier and sold my account a few years back, made a few hundred out of it.
Playing princess connect currently. You can totally F2P these games but you will miss out on some characters.

Impressive, how many hours logged? Not that RMT is exactly worth the time "investment" in itself, I already know.
Also, don't these games having login/out encourage that kind of behaviour? I didn't know phone games even had usernames and passwords. Unless you're just sharing a key or something.

How many hours no clue, but I am usually very thorough and I wont deny I had quite some luck aswell. Had about 19 ssr in fgo, few max bond characters aswell. Most of them were maxed in skills aswell I think. Big pain in the ass and eventually got bored. The game is not really exiting since the combat is freaking easy, outside of challenge events or weird comps I guess. Basically every character that got released at some point felt the same. Should just play these games for the waifu values honestly.
And yeah you dont really need to make an account usually, but if you want to transfer an account to a different mobile there are different ways to do it. In fgo it was some kind of key I think?
