The irony of communities is that any type of activity drives new activity. Kind of already knew the theory on Kissu but the complete silence after removing spam makes posting seem less welcome

Do you mean people will comment on spam, thus driving new activity which will then drive activity to THAT activity?
Well, it couldn't hurt I suppose, as long as the spam isn't terribly harmful, but it's usually a great annoyance

No, I mean the awkward silence means people feel like there's silence to be broken. Breaking the silence is a mental hurdle that makes it harder to post

Here's the quick hack version of post form bait fields for spambots, to avoid having to play a never-ending regex game with raw-comment. For now the bait fields are hardcoded. I put the display:none rule into GENERIC.scm so you'll have to rebuild the stylesheets. Enjoy.

budget: around a $1000

What I need:
- new as in "never been used before" (people watch porn with their laptop, I don't want to type on a keyboard covered with the semen of a previous owner)
- something lightweight (13-14'')
- sturdy construction, can't afford to buy another one before long, can't afford to buy cheap, had to sell my NEET body for those $1000
- RAM, more RAM, even more RAM, never enough RAM, upgradable RAM
- quad core, but doesn't need to be too powerful, low watt
- no discrete GPU, I don't game, I need Intel integrated graphics for Lunix (so, Intel proc only)
- silence, I need a lot of silence. I've never heard the fans of my Asus Zenbook ux305la, it's ok if the fans kick in during heavy loads, but I don't want to hear them while I daydream. I mostly daydream and barely heavy load anyway.
- Atheros AR5B22 AR9462 wifi card for Lunix (they cost less than $10 if I can replace the factory-installed card)
- good battery life would be nice
- hardware compatiblity with Linux and why not FreeBSD, OpenBSD, OSX, Windows 10 and TempleOS...
- matte display
- good keyboard
- all parts serviceable/upgradable
- 2 M2 SSD would be great
- legacy ports like USB A, SD card reader, HDMI...

Usage: shitposting, SSH clients, chan browsing, programming, running virtual machines

The new old model Lenovo T480 with i5 8350U, Intel UHD 620 graphics, 1920x1080 matte shitty screen, 2 DDR4 RAM slots ticks all the boxes except maybe bad cooling/silence. Am I missing anything or can I order it tomorrow?

Is there really that much differences between the fields? I'm skeptical about that. There might be different constraints but I'd like to believe that they are fundamentally the same activity. But I'm open to reconsider my position.

I was thinking about how to decompose programming into smaller activities, that would be easier to improve at, but it's pretty hard. If I take something like debugging, that's certainly an important part of programming, but is it actually any easier to practice than programming itself? I don't feel like I've gotten closer to an answer this way.

9 guest@cc 2022-06-01T00:13:10
Greatest or the most successful? I think you could be the best one in the world, but it wouldn't necessarily become a successful career and get you fame and fortune.
I guess... practice a lot? Some people just have brains that do certain things better, though, and if you don't have that kind of brain you could be limited.

Greatest, I am not after fame and fortune but competence. Practice, yes, but what and how? I can keep doing exercises from textbooks but those seem to cover only a limited domain of programming.

Sunshine season 1 is really good if you like the new characters and don't mind a bit of a plot retread with completely different cast, but season 2 isn't very good. I thought the movie got back to s1 feel and would like it better than the muse one if the rival group parts were cut out.

Niji is a spinoff (though some people would get really mad if they heard this, season 1 is your typical shallow upbeat slice of life but there is a music video at the end of most episodes and a yuri subplot near the end. Season 2 (which is airing now) is boring if you unless you are a big fan of the new characters. Overall its very skippable.

What I think you meant was the new one is superstar, its quite good and has the best 3dcg in the series. (excluding the song in episode 1) It captures the spirit of the show but gives a lot less importance to the group dynamic, its less "make a group, get as many people as possible, and then go straight for being the best group ever" and more focused on the development of the leader (to a lesser degree the rest) with some great songs and fun moments of them being friends along the way. This one has 2 characters that are unlikable at the very start, and the plot of the school council president was probably the worst one in love live, but I found it fun to watch and a welcome change to the traditional love live formula.

So if you liked the original series and want more watch sunshine, its shares much in common with the original while being subtly different in fundamental ways, making it its own experience while still feeling familiar. Superstar is the one I would recommend to people new to the series as it feels the most modern (SIP in particular feels like a product of its time) and its accessible while retaining quality, though they are also forcing new characters into it so it might end up with the dynamics that made it good and unique destroyed. I am hoping for the best but its always safe to be pessimistic.

I recently remembered that I had a spare low powered GPU around my apartment. Since one of the monitors I was using only had VGA, I figured I could use the card to power that monitor and have a proper dual screen set-up.
A few days of research, trail, error and wiping my OS disks multiple times, I got it to work, but only after eschewing desktop environments.
Despite it being a seemingly common and well documented feature, for some reason many desktop environments don't know how to handle more than one Xscreen, based on my experience with XFCE, KDE and MATE. Sure, it is easier to just use the inputs already available on one GPU, but in my case this wasn't an option since my card lacked the right input without an adapter. According to the reading I've done online, using multiple GPUs for each monitor was a normal thing, has the feature become that depreciated with time?

I did get Xinerama working with xfce a few days back, but I noticed that some of the programs I like don't play nice with it. I wouldn't mind trying it out in the future though.
I'm currently on Fluxbox, and I've been able to get my set-up working on it. It wasn't easy, but that's not the WM's fault, I just had to learn more about how xorg works to get things going. Now I just have to settle in to doing more configuration by hand.

Of course an edge case like that is going to be largely unsupported.
»
5 guest@cc 2022-06-11T20:03:49

In a way, I guess the lack of support can be seen as a good thing, as users no longer have to buy multiple cards to have multiple monitors running. Still, it was a bit of an inconvenience.

Did you know there are at least 5783 gay fanfics of Kirk+Spock? I didn't but i find it fascinating.
https://ksarchive.com/

>Kirk closed his eyes as all concentration centered on the pleasure in his groin. "Ghods," he gasped. "It's beautiful, Spock. That feels so good." It had been too long for both of them.

>A deep growl was slowly emerging from the Vulcan's chest. Kirk reached and began stroking his partner's green-tinged penis. It jumped at his touch, and he had to grasp it firmly to hold it.

Turns out spock has a green dick.

Since 8/jp/ doesn't need this site any more and since there's hardly anyone here, there's no harm in changing things up in crazy ways. I originally started making this just to experiment with various features anyway.

I've had a few ideas.
For starters, big imageboards tend to be more like chatrooms, and although I haven't used a forum in forever I still think there's some value in the slower feeling of forums. So one idea might be to slow down the speed of an imageboard by only serving a static board that doesn't show live posts. People can view the old posts and make replies all day, but the replies don't show up until some fixed time every 24 hours (or every 6 hours or whatever) when the entire site updates to display all the new posts that were made in that period.
This way you could just come and check out the site like once or twice a day instead of having the feeling of being stuck constantly checking threads for new replies. If a big imageboard behaved that way I wonder if it would encourage people to spend more time creating interesting content or coming up with original thoughts of their own before posting, and also cool down hot heads so arguments will probably be much shorter lived.

Another idea might be to have something like 2 channels for each thread, side by side. One would be for lower quality comments, arguments, or things you want to say to one person that isn't relevant to the whole thread (sort of similar to when you sage your post knowing that it doesn't deserve to bump the thread), and the other channel for things that you think everyone should see. Of course this wouldn't be moderated at all or anything, it would just be up to each poster to decide which one to use.

If anyone has any other interesting or weird ideas I'd like to hear them too, or let me know what you think of the 2 above.

I saw your mention of this site on 4chan's /qa/ board, and it's actually growing on me very quickly. It obviously has less content for me to read, which is bad, but it's so small that posting is easy (no Captchas <3 ), and I only started visiting 4chan on my way to naughty porno websites anyway, so in fact, having less content means I save time.

I really like the visual style, although more things should be clickable to streamline the experience.

Also, why do you have sage? Nobody here is trolling, so what's wrong with bumping threads? I keep hovering my mouse cursor over the word "Anonymous" in people's posts, because it looks like a link but it's just someone saging the thread, even though it's a decent reply to a decent thread.

>but it's just someone saging the thread, even though it's a decent reply to a decent thread.

You've clearly been brainwashed by all those faggots who have no idea what sage is for.

There are tons of reasons to not bump threads that have nothing to do with quality, or shitposting, or being a dick, or anything mean at all.
If you look at other imageboards or textboards (especially Japanese ones) you'll see lots of really positive or high quality posts that are saged. Just sage if you don't feel like bumping the thread to the top, that's really all there is to it. People read into it too much and turned it into something it was never supposed to be.

For example, this thread is completely irrelevant now >>16 the admin even said so. There's no point in bumping it to the top of the board. I can leave this comment for you to see, and that's all that's needed so I'm saging. I don't need the whole site to see this comment. I can always just link here later if someone asks about sage in another thread.

I had to stop using DuckDuckGo because
- the Japanese search suggestions were always incredibly pedophilic, despite some basic attempt to filter out obscenity
- the noscript DuckDuckGo gives entirely different, way lower quality results, listing the same unrelated results (manga, always the same titles and websites; or the index pages of porn, dlsite, and booth) for different search queries

used to have one where I would call loop variables "iii" and "jjj" and "kkk" instead of "i" and "j" and "k"

But, everything in Racket is an expression! Value of everything but price of nothing and all that.

I have the tendency (though unintentionally) to create patches of code that keep my program running, but are never called or referenced once by anything else. It becomes bloat since you want to get rid of it, but you can't because for some reason it's vital to the architecture I've created.

That's called being a bad programmer.

ok so if computational processes are beings that inhabit computers, people create programs to conjure those spirits and you have no magical power ability whatsoever then is there any hope for becoming a wizard

Yes, just read the Holy Texts: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_C_Programming_Language

I can't believe I have to write spoilers to a textbook, but here it goes. Read at your own peril.

In the last two chapters the curtain is pulled back and you get to see how the wizard's magic works. It's part of the book's "story", they start with saying the computer science is not really a science but has more in common with magic. But this is not approving, they want it to mature into science and they gradually reveal what goes on behind the scene. Early science was also connected to magic and esotericism, hence the alchemist on the cover of the book. I think it is fitting because many people seem to be stuck in the "programming is reciting spells" phase for an embarrassing amount of time.

But yes, if you read SICP, it will teach you what you need to know to become a wizard and more.
